The 2020 Alienware Games competition will kick off on July 17, ESPN has learned, allowing gamers to win over $150,000 in cash and prizes across several weeks and multiple games. The event will feature several pros, athletes and celebrities and conclude on September 11.
Participants will be able to score points through challenges by playing League of Legends, Fortnite, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and VALORANT. One example given (though not necessarily one that will be seen during the competition) would be in League of Legends to earn a triple kill. Participants will also be able to earn additional points by using the hashtag #2020AlienwareGames on social media while sharing highlights, as well as watching the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) on watch.lolesports.com, which will generate unique codes to enter in the 2020 Alienware Games App for redemption.
All of the point totals will appear on a weekly leaderboard, where the top 250 by game will be awarded $5 of in-game currency in that game, with more raffled off randomly each week (thus giving all players a chance to win). A total of $12,500 of in game currency will be distributed each week for eight weeks. The leaderboard will reset every week. At the very end of the challenge, the 16 players with the highest total points across the entire competition will receive an Alienware Aurora R9 gaming rig. An additional eight will be raffled off, bringing the total distributed to 24.
Throughout the competition, luminaries such as Misfits streamer Amalie Marie “Proxyfox” Reisvaag, as well as Team Liquid’s LCS Jungler Mads “Broxah” Brock-Pedersen, CS:GO pro Jake’ “Stewie2K” Yip and Fortnite player Thomas “72hrs” Mulligan. Athletes scheduled to be involved include Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward and Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans. Actor Jerry Ferrara (also an avid streamer and consultant with Knicks Gaming in NBA 2K League) and Grammy-award nominated record producer Steve Aoki (also an investor in Rekt Global, who owns Rogue).
The competition will be available to contestants in the United States and Canada and is organized by Playwire, an esports advertiser and revenue amplification company, as well as Overwolf, an all-in-one platform where you can build, distribute and monetize in-game apps. This follows last year’s challenge, which saw over 344,000 hours played and 72 million total impressions across platforms.
